語源
「comic-book」は英語に由来し、'comic'（ユーモア・喜劇に関する）＋ 'book'（書物）の組合せである。
『comic』はギリシャ語の 'komikos'（ラテン語 'comicus' 経由）に由来し「喜劇に関する」を意味した。『book』は古英語の 'bōc' に由来する。『comic book』という複合語は20世紀初頭に安価な漫画雑誌を指すために生まれ、1930〜1940年代にかけてハイフン付きの形が印刷で一般化した。
当初『comic』は主に『面白い・喜劇的な』を意味し、『comic book』もユーモア寄りの漫画を指していたが、時と共にスーパーヒーローやドラマなど多様なジャンルを含む絵で語る物語全般を指すようになった。
