語源
『chiasma』はギリシャ語の『χίασμα』（キアスマ）に由来し、語根の『χιάζω』（chiázō）は「交差する」や「ギリシャ文字のカイ（χ）の形にする」を意味しました。
『chiasma』は後期ラテン語／近代ラテン語の『chiasma』を経て19世紀に英語へ取り入れられ、医学・生物学分野で用いられるようになりました。
当初は「交差」や「十字の印」を意味していましたが、次第に『視交叉』などの解剖学的用法や、染色体の交差点としての細胞学的な専門用語の意味を持つようになりました。
