語源
「chaplain」は古フランス語の「chapelain」に由来し、さらに後期ラテン語の「capellanus」（『capella』に関するもの）から来ている。
中世フランス語の「chapelain」（および北フランス語の相当語）や後期ラテン語の「capellanus」から変化し、中英語を経て現代英語の「chaplain」になった。
当初は『capella』（小さな外套や礼拝堂に関するもの）に関係する保管人や従者を指していたが、次第に礼拝堂や組織に付属する聖職者（司祭・牧師）を意味するようになった。
