語源
「cathexis」はギリシャ語の『κατέχεσις』（カテケシス）に由来し、『kata-』は強意または方向を示す接頭辞、『hexis』は「保持」または「所持」を意味しました。
『cathexis』は20世紀初頭にドイツ語やフロイトの著作の英訳を通して英語に取り入れられ、精神分析の概念（ドイツ語の『Besetzung』に関連）を表す語として用いられるようになりました。
もともとはギリシャ語で「保持」や「所持」を意味しましたが、精神分析的用法では『観念・対象・人に対する心理的・感情的エネルギーの投射（投資）』を意味するように変化しました。
