語源
「cannibalism」はスペイン語の「caníbal」に由来し、当時ヨーロッパ人が出会ったカリブ（Carib）民族の呼称で、人肉食の報告と結び付けられた語である。
16世紀のスペイン語「caníbal」から英語の「cannibal」を経て、行為や状態を示す接尾辞「-ism」を付けて「cannibalism」という名詞が形成された。
当初は（ヨーロッパ人から見た）カリブ民族の呼称を指していたが、やがて「人肉を食べる人」を意味し、さらに時間を経て「同種を食べる行為（人肉食）」という現在の意味になった。
