語源
「calcine」は中世ラテン語の『calcinare』に由来し、ラテン語の『calx』（石灰、lime）を語源とする。
『calcine』は中世ラテン語の動詞『calcinare』（『calx』由来）から古フランス語・英語への移行を経て、中英語の『calcinen』の形を経て現代英語『calcine』になった。
当初は「加熱して石灰（粉）にする」という意味が中心であったが、次第に「強く加熱して揮発物を取り除く／熱分解を起こす」という現在のより広い用法に発展した。
