語源
「bunting」（布・旗）は中期英語（'bonting'や'bunting'のような古い形）に由来し、着色された布や模様のある布を指すゲルマン語族の語と関連があると考えられる。鳥の名前は小さく丸い鳥を指す方言語に由来する可能性がある。
中期英語で布の種類を指したのが始まりで、やがて旗や飾りに使われる布、さらに飾り旗そのものの意味に広がった。鳥の名称はその後、小型の種子食の鳥に転用された。野球用語の意味（動詞 'bunt' に由来する）は別に後で発達した。
当初は布（しばしば色付きの布）を意味していたが、次第に飾り旗に使われる布や飾り旗そのものの意味に拡大した。そのほか、小鳥の名前や、動詞 'bunt' に関係する野球の用語としての意味が独立して生じた。
