語源
「bootstrap」は英語で「boot（靴）」＋「strap（紐・ストラップ）」の合成語で、元はブーツを引き上げるための紐・輪を指した。
「bootstrap」は19世紀に物理的なブーツの引き手を指す語として始まった。19世紀には「自分のブーツの引き手で自分を持ち上げる」という、ありえない行為を皮肉る比喩表現が生まれた。20世紀半ばにコンピュータ用語として採用され（ブートローダ）、さらに1979年にBradley Efronが統計学でのリサンプリング法に『bootstrap』と名付けた。
当初は文字通り「ブーツの紐」を意味したが、比喩的に「不可能な自力での持ち上げ」を表すようになり、現代では「自力で始める・自動起動する（コンピュータ）」や統計手法の名称として使われるようになった。
