語源
「bloomer」（衣服）は姓「Bloomer」に由来し、19せいきのアメリカの婦人参政権運動家Amelia Bloomerが推奨したゆったりしたズボンの様式が「bloomers」と呼ばれるようになった。
「bloomer」（衣服の意）は19せいきにAmelia Bloomerの名にちなんで名付けられた。別に「bloomer」（人）は動詞「bloom」（古英語 'blōma'＝花・開花）＋接尾辞「-er」から派生した。
当初はAmelia Bloomerに結びつく特定の衣服様式を指したが、やがて女性用の短めの下着や体操着一般を指すようになった。人を指す意味は「花が咲く人（遅れて開花する人）」で比喩的に用いられ、さらに「大きな失敗」を意味する俗語としても使われるようになった。
