語源
「baygall」は米国英語に由来し、語源は『bay』（ベイの樹木・低木を指す）と『gall』（おそらく『gallberry』や湿地を表す地方語の短縮）という語の合成語である。
「baygall」は19世紀の米国南東部で地域的に発生した記述的な合成語で、ベイ樹やガルベリーが優占する沼地を指す用語として使われ始めた。長い外来語的変遷は経ていない。
当初は小規模なベイや低木が優占する湿地窪地を特に指していたが、次第に同様の酸性ベイ優占湿地一般を指す語として広く用いられるようになった。
