「bauxite」はフランス語の語『bauxite』に由来し、プロヴァンスの地名「Les Baux（レ・ボー）」と鉱物名に付く接尾辞「-ite」から命名された。
歴史的変遷
1821年にフランスの地質学者ピエール・ベルトリエによって地名『Les Baux』と接尾辞『-ite』から造語され、フランス語形のまま英語に入った。
