語源
「bathos」はギリシャ語の単語「『βάθος』(bathos)」に由来し、語幹は「深さ」を意味していた。
「bathos」は近代ラテン語を経て18世紀に英語に入り、アレクサンダー・ポープの風刺詩『Peri Bathos』で広まり、文字どおりの「深さ」から修辞的・文学的な意味へ転じた。
元々は「深さ」を意味していたが、時を経て「壮麗なものから陳腐なものへの急落」や「過度の陳腐な感傷」を指すようになった。
