「barometz」はロシア語の単語『баромец』（barometz）に由来し、この語は伝説上の植物と子羊を指すために用いられた。
『barometz』はタタールの植物羊を記した中世から近世の旅行記や博物誌を通じて英語に入った（ロシア語やほかの欧州語経由）。のちに植物学ラテン語でCibotium barometzに用いられた。
当初は伝説上の植物動物（植物羊）を指していたが、次第にその伝説に関連する実在のシダ植物の名前にも用いられるようになった。
