語源
『barndoor』は英語に由来し、具体的には'barn'と'door'の結合で、'barn'はもともと「穀物を蓄える場所」を、'door'は「閉められる開口部」を意味した。
'barn'は古英語の'bern'（倉庫）に由来し、'door'は古英語の'duru'または'dor'に由来する。中英語で合成語'barn-door'として納屋の扉を指す語が成立し、現代英語で'barndoor'や'barn door'として用いられるようになった。
当初は「納屋の扉」を意味したが、時代とともに比喩的・技術的な用法（照明器具のヒンジ式フラップなど）にも拡張された。
