語源
「bargello」はイタリア語に由来し、もともと市の役人や監督者を指した語である。
中世イタリア語（および中世ラテン語の文脈）で官職を指す語として用いられ、イタリア語から英語へと入り、官職そのもの、官職が置かれた建物（Bargello）、さらにその建物に関連する刺繍様式を指すようになった。
当初は「市の役人・監督者」を意味していたが、次第にその官職の建物や、その建物に由来する刺繍様式を指すように意味が広がった。
