語源
「barbera」はイタリア語に由来し、ピエモンテ地方で使われるぶどう品種名「Barbera」である。名前はそのぶどうに関係する地名や家名に由来すると考えられている。
「barbera」は中世〜近世のイタリアのぶどう栽培記録に『Barbera』として現れ、ぶどうやワインの名称として英語にも取り入れられ、原形が保持された。
当初は地元のぶどう名（および地名や家名）を指していたが、次第にぶどう品種とそのワインの両方を指す国際的な用語となった。
