語源
「barathrum」は古代ギリシア語の語『βάραθρον（baráthron）』に由来し、もとは「深淵・穴」を意味した。
『βάραθρον』はラテン語の『barathrum』に移行し、後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語でも用いられた。学術的・文学的借用を通じて英語にも入り、形は『barathrum』のままである。
当初は物理的な「深い穴」を指していたが、特にキリスト教・中世の文献において「地獄」や「破滅」を意味する比喩へと広がり、英語では文学的に字義的・比喩的両方で使われるようになった。
