語源
『baptise』はギリシャ語を経てラテン語・古フランス語から来ている。具体的には後期ラテン語の「baptizare」、ギリシャ語の「baptizein（βαπτίζειν）」に由来し、語根の『bapto/bapt-』は『浸す・沈める』を意味した。
ギリシャ語の『baptizein』が後期ラテン語の『baptizare』に入り、さらに古フランス語の『baptiser』や中英語の『baptisen』を経て現代英語の『baptise』になった。
当初は『浸す・沈める』という意味だったが、次第に『キリスト教の洗礼（baptism）を施す』という特定の宗教行為を指すようになった。
