語源
「banzai」は日本語の語『万歳』（ばんざい）に由来し、文字どおりは「1万年」を意味し、長寿や長い治世を祈る表現として使われた。
『万歳』は中国語の『萬歲（wànsuì）』に由来し、「1万年」を意味する（長寿や長い治世を願う表現）。日本語に取り入れられ、19〜20世紀に英語に借用されて現代英語の『banzai』になった。
元々は「1万年」という文字通りの意味だったが、日本語では次第に「万歳！＝長生きを祈る・祝福する掛け声」の意味になり、英語では歓声としての意味と軍事的な意味（万歳突撃）を帯びるようになった。
