語源
「banyan」はグジャラート語に由来し、具体的には「vāṇiyo」（「baniyā」「bania」とも）という語で、語根は「商人」を意味した。
「banyan」はポルトガル語や近世の南アジア記録を介して英語に入り（ポルトガル語 'banian'、ヒンディー語/グジャラート語 'baniyā'）、17世紀にまずインドの商人を指す語として現れ、後にその木や男性用のゆったりしたガウンにも転用された。
当初はインドの商人階級を意味していたが、やがて商人が集まった木や商人が着た衣服にも用いられるようになり、現在の「バニヤンの木」「バニヤン（ガウン）」という意味に発展した。
