語源
「banyan」はグジャラート語の語（『vāṇiyo』（変形: 'vaniyo'／'vaniyan'））に由来し、その語は『商人』を意味していた。
「banyan」はグジャラート語・ヒンドゥスターニ語の語『vāṇiyo』から変化し、ポルトガル語（記録上は 'banian' 等）を経て17世紀に英語に入った。もともとはインドの商人を指し、のちにイチジクの木やゆったりしたガウンにも用いられるようになった。
当初は『商人』を意味していたが、時間を経て英語では『（商人が集まった）大型のイチジクの木』や『ゆったりしたガウン』などの意味に広がった・変化した。
