語源
「banderlog」はヒンドゥスターニー語（ヒンディー語・ウルドゥー語）由来で、特に『bandar』（猿）と『log』（人々）から来ている。『bandar』は最終的にサンスクリット語の『vānara』に遡る。
この合成語はラドヤード・キップリングが『ジャングル・ブック』（1894年）で『bander-log』として猿の一族の名に用いたことから英語に入り、文献語として定着し、後に比喩的に『banderlog／bander-log』と使われるようになった。
当初は『猿の人々（猿の群れ）』という文字通りの意味だったが、時とともに『無秩序な、あるいは思慮のない群衆・雑多な集団』という比喩的な意味に発展した。
