語源
『bahuvrihi』はサンスクリット語の『bahuvrīhi』に由来し、『bahu』は「多い・たくさん」、『vṛīhi』は「米（こめ）」を意味した。
『bahuvrīhi』は19世紀のサンスクリット学を通じて言語学用語として欧米に取り入れられ、外延的複合語の分類名として英語に採用された。
