語源
「bagpipe」は中英語に由来し、『bag（袋）』と古英語の『pīpe（笛、管）』に由来する語を結合したもので、'bag'は「袋・ポーチ」を、'pipe'は「風を使って音を出す管」を意味していた。
中英語では『bag』＋『pipe』の複合語（'bagpype'のような異形が見られる）として用いられ、そこから現代英語の『bagpipe』になった。動詞の『to bagpipe（バグパイプで演奏する）』は名詞から派生した。
当初は文字通り「袋と管からなる笛（bagとpipe）」を指していたが、次第に特定の伝統的な楽器や（動詞としての）その演奏を表す語へと意味が移った。
