語源
「bacteroid」は新ラテン語／ギリシャ語の要素に由来する。'bacter-'は新ラテン語の'bacterium'（最終的にはギリシャ語'bakterion'「小さな棒、桿」）に由来し、接尾辞'-oid'はギリシャ語'-oeidēs'「〜のような、似た」を意味する。
ギリシャ語の'bakterion'→新ラテン語の'bacterium'（学術ラテン語）→英語では結合形の'bacter-'と接尾辞'-oid'が結合して現代の英語語'bacteroid'になった。
当初は「細菌のような」を意味したが、次第に根粒内部での窒素固定形態やバクテロイデス属に関連する細菌など、専門的な生物学的意味を持つようになった。
