'bacterioid'は「bacterium」(ニューラテン語、ギリシャ語'bakterion'『小さな棒・桿』から)と、『〜のような』を表す接尾辞'-oid'(ギリシャ語 'oeidēs'由来)を組み合わせて現代に作られた語である。
'bacterium'はギリシャ語'bakterion'（bakterion、『小さな棒・桿』）に由来する。ラテン語・ギリシャ語の形態素を用いることで接尾辞'-oid'を付けた'bacterioid'が作られ、科学文献では'bacteroid'という綴りも混用されてきた。
