語源
「backstrap」は英語由来の複合語で、「back（背・脊）」＋「strap（ひも・バンド）」から成る。'back'は古英語 'bæc'、'strap'は古ノルド語／中期英語由来で「留めるためのひも」を意味する。
「backstrap」は英語で直訳的に作られた複合語で、元は背にかけるストラップを指し、のちに狩猟者・解体者によって動物の背に沿った肉（背ロース）を指すようになった。
元来は「背のためのストラップ（物）」だったが、のちに動物の背に沿った肉（背ロース）を指す意味を持ち、さらにそれに関わる動作（切り取る等）の意味も生じた。
