語源
「backplane」は現代英語の合成語で、『back』（後ろ）と『plane』（平面）から成り、20世紀中頃に電子機器用語として、シャーシの後部にある相互接続用の平板を指す語として作られた。
『back』は古英語の「bæc」（背・後ろ）に由来し、『plane』はラテン語の「planus」（平ら）にさかのぼる（古フランス語などを経由）。これらの要素が現代英語で結合して技術用語『backplane』になった。
当初は『後ろの平らな面』という文字通りの意味だったが、技術用語として『モジュール間の電気的・信号的相互接続を提供する基板』という意味に発展した。
