「backlash」は英語の複合語で、'back'＋'lash'から成る。'back'は古英語の'bæc'（後ろ・背中）に由来し、'lash'は打つ・むちで打つことを意味する古いゲルマン系語に由来する。
19世紀中頃に近代英語で成立し、当初は歯車や機械の逆行や遊び（mechanical recoil）を指した。その後、社会的・政治的な反発を表す比喩的用法に拡張された。
当初は機械的な逆行・遊びを意味していたが、次第に社会的・政治的な強い反発・逆反応という現在の意味に発展した。
