語源
「backhaul」は英語に由来する造語で、'back'（戻る・後ろ）と 'haul'（引く・運ぶ）の合成語である。
「backhaul」は20世紀の特に米国のトラック輸送や海上輸送の用語として成立し、その後ネットワークの『戻し回線』を指す意味にも拡大した。
当初は『帰りの便で荷物を運ぶ』を意味していたが、次第に帰り荷一般や、トラフィックを中枢へ戻す通信回線の意味にも広がった。
