語源
『backhaul』は英語に由来し、特に 'back'（後ろ・戻る）と 'haul'（引く・運ぶ）という語から成る合成語です。
『backhaul』は近代英語（20世紀中頃）において 'back'＋'haul' の合成語として海運・物流用語で成立し、後に通信分野でもリモートサイトから中枢へトラフィックを運ぶ意味で採用されました。
当初は文字通り『後ろへ運ぶ』の意味でしたが、時間とともに意味が拡張・専門化され、ネットワークでのデータ伝送などの技術的用法も持つようになりました。
