語源
「backhaul」は英語に由来し、古英語の 'bæc'（後ろ・背）と中英語／古英語の語根 'halen'／'halian'（引く・運ぶ）を合成した語です。'bæc'は「後ろ」を、'halian'は「引く・運ぶ」を意味しました。
『backhaul』は輸送用語として当初 'back haul'（2語）で使われ、次に 'back-haul'（ハイフン）となり、最終的に単語 'backhaul' に統合されました。その後、通信分野に借用され、トラフィックをコアへ戻す回線の意味でも使われるようになりました。
最初は「戻り便での輸送」を意味しましたが、次第に通信分野でも「トラフィックをコアへ戻す回線・伝送」の意味で使われるようになりました。
