語源
'backhand'は英語に由来し、語を構成する'back'（後ろ）と'hand'（手）を合成した語である。
'back'と'hand'はそれぞれ古英語の'bæc'と'hand'に由来し、複合語'backhand'は近代英語で生じ、19世紀頃からスポーツ用語として定着した。
当初は文字通り「後ろ＋手」を指したが、次第に手の甲やラケットの裏側で打つ特定の打撃や打球を指すようになり、さらに比喩的な意味（遠回しの侮辱など）も生じた。
