語源
「backfield」は英語起源で、『back』（古英語'bæc'＝後ろ）と『field』（古英語'feld'＝野原、畑）の複合語に由来する。
『backfield』は英語で複合語として形成され、アメリカンフットボールのルール整備が進んだ19世紀後半〜20世紀初頭に、スクリメージライン後方の区域という競技特有の意味を持つようになった。
当初は文字どおり「野原の後方部分」を指したが、やがてフットボールにおける「ラインの後方の区域／その区域にいる選手たち」という専門的な意味に変化した。
