「baccalaureate」は中古ラテン語『baccalaureatus』（『baccalaureus』に関連）に由来し、ここで'bacca'は「実（ベリー）」、'laurea'は「月桂樹（ローレル）」を意味しました。
『baccalaureate』はフランス語の『baccalauréat』を経て中英語/近代英語に入った言葉です。
当初は『学士の地位・学位』を指しましたが、次第に卒業に関連する礼拝や式典（卒業前の説教や式）を指す意味も持つようになり、現在でも学士号の意味を保持しています。
