語源
『babbitt』は姓『Babbitt』（英米）に由来し，特に軸受用の白色合金『Babbitt金属』を発明したアイザック・Babbitt（1799–1862）に結び付く。
『Babbitt』はまず人名を指し，やがて彼が開発した金属を指す名詞になった。名詞としての金属・処理法から動詞『to babbitt』が作られ，また1922年のシンクレア・ルイスの小説『Babbitt』が『同調的な中産階級の人物』という意味を広め，そこから『babbitted』のような動詞・形容詞的用法が生じた。
