語源
「baalize」は北西セム語（聖書ヘブライ語・フェニキア語経由）に起源があり、具体的には人名・神名の「Baal」から来ており、「Baal」は「主」や「所有者」を意味した。そこに英語の動詞化接尾辞「-ize」が付いて動詞が作られた。
「Baal」は聖書ヘブライ語やギリシア語・ラテン語などを通じて英語に入った語で、近代英語では固有名詞に生産的な動詞接尾辞「-ize」を付けて「baalize」が作られ、『バアルにする』という意味が与えられた。
当初は文字どおり『人や物をバアル（崇拝対象の偶像）にする』という意味だったが、やがて比喩的に『偶像化する・絶対的権威として扱う』という意味でも用いられるようになった。
