語源
「azazel」は聖書ヘブライ語の語『עֲזָאזֵל』に由来する。要素の解釈は議論があり、『ʿazaz』（除去やヤギに関連する語の可能性）と『el』（『神』または名前要素）からなると読む説がある。
『azazel』は聖書ヘブライ語に現れ、七十人訳（ギリシア語）やラテン語聖書を経て英語訳に取り入れられ、固有名や概念としての形を保ってきた。
