語源
「avouch」は古フランス語（アンゴ＝ノルマン）の語『avoucher』（または『avoucer』）に由来し、『a-』はラテン語の接頭辞 ad-（〜へ）に由来し、語根はラテン語 'vocare'（呼ぶ）に関連する。
『avoucher』は中英語の形（例：'avouchen'、'avowchen'）を経て、最終的に現代英語の動詞『avouch』になった。
当初は「（証人として）呼び出す、正式に認める」という意味だったが、時代とともに「断言する、保証する、証言する」の意味へ変化した。
