語源
「avidya」はサンスクリット語に由来し、具体的には単語「avidyā」から来ており、『a-』は『〜でない』を、『vidyā』は『知識』を意味した。
「avidya」はパーリ語の『avijjā』などインド諸語の形を経て、仏教・ヒンドゥー教文献の翻訳・研究を通じてサンスクリット語の音写語として英語に入った。
