『avant-garde』はフランス語『avant-garde』に由来し、『avant』は「前（まえ）／先へ」を、『garde』は「護る・守り」を意味した。
『avant-garde』は19世紀にフランスの軍事用語（文字どおり「前衛」）として英語に入り、のちに芸術・文化の分野で革新の先頭に立つ者を指す語へと拡張された。
もともとは「軍隊の前衛」を意味していたが、時を経て「実験的で先進的な芸術・思想の先駆者」という現在の意味に変化した。
