語源
「auxesis」は古代ギリシャ語の語『αὔξησις（auxēsis）』に由来し、語根の『auxein』は「増やす」「成長する」を意味した。
「auxesis」は中世ラテン語／新ラテン語の「auxēsis」として借用され、学術的・修辞的用法を通じて英語に入り、複数形として「auxeses」が用いられるようになった。
当初は一般的な「増加」や「成長」を意味していたが、時間とともに「増幅」や「クライマックス」を指す修辞的な意味も持つようになった。
