語源
「auturgy」は古代ギリシャ語の語『αὐτουργία（autourgia）』に由来し、『autos（自己）』と『ergon（働き）』を含む。
『auturgy』は後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語の『auturgia』を経て、学術的借用語として近代以降の英語に入った。
当初はギリシャ語で文字通り『自ら働くこと』を意味していたが、時間を経て『自給自足・独立して作用すること』という抽象的な意味に発展した。
