「autothermy」はギリシャ語の要素「autos」と「thermos」に由来し、「autos」は「自己」、「thermos」は「熱」を意味した。
「autothermy」は近代の科学英語でギリシャ語の語根から（ニューラテン語や19–20世紀の生理学文献を経て）形成され、自己生成熱を指す専門用語として定着した。
当初は文字通り「自己の熱」を意味していたが、時間とともに「体温を調節するための内部的な熱生成」という現代の生理学的意味に発展した。
