語源
「autotelic」はギリシャ語の『autotelēs』に由来し、『auto-（自己）』と『telos（目的・終わり）』を語源とする。
『autotelic』はギリシャ語『autotelēs』から派生し、19〜20世紀に英語に取り入れられ、後にミハイ・チクセントミハイのフロー理論など心理学での使用によって広まった。
当初は文字どおり『それ自身の目的を持つ』を意味していたが、次第に心理学的な用法で『内発的な満足のために行われる（それ自体が目的である）』という意味で使われるようになった。
