語源
「autosexing」は接頭辞『auto-』（ギリシャ語'au⸺tos'由来で「自己」）と名詞『sex』（ラテン語'sexus'由来）および動名詞化接尾辞'-ing'から成る。
20世紀の家禽（ニワトリなど）関連文献で用いられるようになった造語で、『auto-』『sex』『-ing』を結合して作られ、古い単語から直接変化したものではない。
もともとは「自己で性別を識別すること」の意で造られ、現在では特に孵化時に雌雄を識別できる品種や育種法を指す専門用語として定着している。
