語源
「autoplastic」はギリシャ語由来の要素から生じ、特に「auto-」は「自己」を意味し、「plastic」はギリシャ語の「plastikos（形成される）」に由来する。
「autoplastic」はギリシャ語要素の結合として医学・心理学用語で形成され、ニューラテン語を経て19世紀後半から20世紀初頭にかけて英語の専門語として定着した。
当初は「自己で形づくられる／自己で形作ることができる」という意味だったが、徐々に医学では自己組織を用いる再建、心理学では自己を変える適応反応を指す用法に特化していった。
