語源
「autonomy」はギリシャ語の「autonomia」に由来し、『auto-』は「自分自身」、『nomos』は「法・慣習」を意味した。
『autonomia』は後期ラテン語／中世ラテン語の『autonomia』を経て、古フランス語の『autonomie』、中英語の『autonomie』となり、現代英語の『autonomy』になった。
もともと文字通り「自らの法（自律）」を意味し、時を経てその核心的意味を維持しながら個人の独立や哲学的な『自己統治』にも用いられるようになった。
