語源
「automatist」はギリシャ語と新ラテン語の語根に由来し、特にギリシャ語の『automatos』および名詞『automaton』から来ており、『auto-』は「自己」、『matos』は「動く」を意味した。
ギリシャ語『automatos』はラテン語・中世の形を経て19世紀後半のフランス語／英語の『automatism』になり、そこに動作者を表す接尾辞『-ist』が付いて『automatist』となった。
当初は「自ら動く」を意味していたが、次第に「自動的な行動」を指す語となり、現在は「自動的に行動する人」や「（芸術・心理の）自動技法の実践者」を指すようになった。
