語源
「automanual」は現代英語の語で、接頭辞「auto-」（ギリシャ語'autos'「自己」由来）と「manual」（ラテン語'manualis'「手の、手に関する」由来）を結合してできている。
「auto-」はギリシャ語'autos'から来ており近代ラテン語/現代語で英語に入った。「manual」はラテン語'manus'（「手」）由来の'manualis'が古フランス語や中英語を経て英語に入った。これらを結合した合成語が現代の技術用語として生まれた。
文字通りは「自己＋手」だが、技術用語としては「自動と手動の両方の操作が可能である」という意味に発展した。
